The official guidelines for battery deployment were often modified and became useless because terrain and battlefield factors would not allow the luxury of space. Don't take what is specified in a book too literal. We all have heard of batteries deployed by sections (2 guns) seperately on a battlefield. This was because of limiting space as much as tactical necessity. We might say that the civil war rewrote the Artillery Manual.
