That's a good question. Proper spacing is 16 yards on center. This gives the team and limber room to move but the term "hub to hub" has been used a lot. Malvern Hill comes to mind right off. And if the guns were going to be static for any period of time they could be placed with their limbers and chests by hand, with the team unhitched. Specifications for a lanyard call for it to be 12 feet long (4 yards). So without putting "number 4" in danger of the next gun in line during recoil the hubs would have to be 4 to 5 yards apart. This puts the center line spacing at 5 to 6 yards. But you can always shorten up the lanyard. I hope Ron Black weighs in on this one.
