Re: Number of Pieces for Tennessee Campaign

Mr. Hodge:
I now believe that I answered your question with information concerning the wrong campaign. I believe that you are asking about Hood's move into Tennessee in November, 1864. If so, here is some information I hope will help.

The book "Cannoneers in Gray" mentions on pages 167-168 that the artillery of the Army of Tennessee consisted of nine artillery battalions, each of three batteries, and two horse artillery battalions.

The number of guns was 108 in the field artillery battalions and sixteen in the horse artillery battalions. The brake down of the type of guns included a total of 124 guns, of 90-12 pounder Napoleons, 12-12 Pdr field howitzers, and 22 rifles.

Source is the book by Larry J Daniel, "Cannoneers in Gray", The University of Alabama Press, Tuscaloosa Al. ISBN 0817304819, 1984.

A curious report of the artillery of the Army of Tennessee with a date of December 21, 1864, commanded by Major General Arnold Elzey appears in the Official Record volume number 45, part 1, serial number 93 on page 682. This report repeats the information given in source quoted above despite the date of December 21 on this report. The next to last line mentions "124 guns when at Florence, Ala" and the last line mentions 59 guns "Number of guns now on hand". The mentioned 59 guns is after the Battle of Nashville.

I hope this may be the information you are seeking.
Ron
