This [photo] bronze six-pounder was of a design that dated back to the 1840s. Such guns, firing projectiles only 3.67 inches in diameter, were thought by Confederates and Federal artiollerists to lack sufficient power and range. But they remained in use in armies on both sides, expecially those in the Western theater, where newer models were scarce.

This gun is identified as the Model 1841 6-pounder gun in the Arms and Equipment of the Union.
