Re: Union Artillery with Sooy Smith

Yes, I believe the total of 80 guns is for the entire campaign as is the list of batteries that I sent previous. I forgot to mention this in my earlier post.

I did find mention in Volume 45, serial #93 a mention of the guns of this battery as "Rodmans" in December 1864. I believe this describtion may be a misnomer, an example of calling guns by other names. The book "Field Artillery Weapons of the Civil War" does not mention Rodman in connection with field artillery weapons. He is known for his work with the heavy artillery guns. Your mention of Woodruff guns may be a more accurate description of the guns of this battery as the same book (just mentioned) as saying the action of the Woodruff guns is difficult to follow as these guns were apparently not assigned to any battery (Quote), but were used by infantry and cavalry. They are known to have participated in Grierson's raid in Mississippi in Hatch's brigade, variously reported as four or six guns. Colonel Edward Hatch referred to them as two pounders (OR Vol 24, Serial 36, pages 530-1) This suggest that the guns described as "Rodmans" are actually "Woodruff" guns and they were part of the artillery of Hatch's cavalry brigade during the Meridan campaign.

Hope this helps
Ron
