Jim,

We originally we going to do a MSG unit and we were trying to find an original tube to use it this exhibit, but since we had no luck in that endeavor and we figured that a patinaed tube would not be used in combat we decided to go with a repro tube instead (shinny). We are taking about every state that sent troop to the battle and there will be original art work for a Cherokee Mounted trooper, an Arkansas soldier, a Texas soldier, and a Missouri State Guard member (Infantry). There will also be a life size high dollar mannequin of a 3rd Louisiana soldier. We decided to go with a Texas artilleryman because there was already a horse with the Cherokee and most of the Texas troops were cavalry so we needed to show southern artillery and we thought Goods would be a good choice, no pun intended. True, most of the artillery at Pea Ridge is MSG and that is why we were headed that way, but we are running into the same problem we are running into with Goods, what exactly did they have at Pea Ridge.

Dr Doug Scott found 24 pounder canister and other evidence in the park and we thought that Landis was here with his two Q&R 24 pounders, but that, as you know, is not true. Shea and Hess state the Good had 2 twelve pound Howitzers and 4 twelve pound guns. What type of 12 pounders is the question? The same goes for the MSG. They had ordered a lot from Q&R, but how much had been delivered and was here? We have the microfilm for items ordered by the MSG but it isn’t clear when things got to their units.

I have several people looking to see if they can find what Good had and every period source comes back with a different account. We more than likely will go with a howitzer just because the museum budget will not over the cost of an M-1841 12 pounder or what ever they had for 12’s.

If you have any suggestions I am all ears.

Steve
