Confederate rifled artillery a

This post is in response to Keith's post of July 25th in the Ruggles' Line discussion.
Keith;
You mention that only 2 rifled guns appear in the confederate artillery at the time of Shiloh. Not so, as five batteries were present with at least one rifle. Stanford's had one rifled 3", Hodgson's had two 6 pdr rifles, Gage's had two 3" rifles, Hubbard's had two 3" rifles, Hudson's had two 3" rifles. In addition, two batteries not present at the Battle of Shiloh had rifles, Miller's had two 3" rifles, the Watson Artillery had four 6pdr rifles. A further three batteries were in Corinth or nearby, Carnes' had one 9 pdr James rifle, Gibson's La battery had four 6 pdr rifles, and Williams' TN battery had one 12 pdr James rifle. This makes a total of 21 rifles with the confederate artillery.

As to four or six gun batteries, The eastern confederate armies were always ahead of the western armies concerning organizational and development matters. When a four gun battery for the confederates was determined, the eastern rebel armies made to transitation sooner than the western army. This is why many six gun batteries appear in the artillery structure in April 1862 but most were changed by the fall.

It seemed that you raised a question or two and I hope this might help you.
