Re: 3rd Iowa Calvary in Action at Salem, Arkansas

There are several examples of ligth artillery being assigned to particularly Union Cavalry units in the Trans Mississippi, particularly Arkansas.

The 5th Kansas Cavalry in 1863 had six 12# Pound Mountain Howitzer attached to them which they used on several of their expeditions. The 1st Indiana Cavalry had three 2.9 inch, Probably Blakely, guns attached to them.

In the Battle of Mount Elba the 5th Kansas' Cav. mountain howitzer were the deciding factor in the outcome of that battle in which the Confederates under John C. Wright outnumbers the Union Cavalry 2 to 1.
