I appreciate this information it clears up my questions, and I am not delusional in thinking the cannon was organic to the unit. It was to the 6th MO and not the 3rd Iowa. The newspaper articles and reports definitely describe a bad swamp. Part of the Battlefield is now the city park, but much of it still remains overflow/swamp next to the Spring River. Lots of trees and thick vegetation.
