Re: 6 or 12 pounders, breech-loading"

Scott,

I don't think I said that 6-pounder Armstrongs were specifically imported, although it is known that some Armstrong field pieces were. There are survivors in both 2.5" (6-pounder) and 3.0" (12-pounder) bore sizes listed in the tables of "The Big Guns" It doesn't say where the 2.5" came from, or were in the U.S./C.S. during the war, but two of them (one with foundry # 106) are in California.

CSA General E.P. Alexander said six Armstrong shunt-gun were obtained just before the close of the war. Hazlett, et. al "Field Artillery Weapons..." states that "recoveries of both compression and studded projectiles prove that both breechloading and muzzleloading 3-inch Armstrong rifles were used by the Confederates." Examples of recovered projectiles for both 3" types are found in Dickey/George's "Field Artillery Projectiles..." Abbot recovered some around Richmond, some muzzleloading ones were dug at Bermuda Hundred, VA, and the breechloading type was dug at High Bridge, VA.
