I don't fully (or even partly) understand his remark "usually used by the navy." Since he'd just commanded a Whitworth during the assaults on Ft. Pemberton, I think if he meant Whitworth, he'd simply have written it. Since he's merely suggesting a course of action it's all pretty hypothetical.
