I apologize in advance for bringing up a subject that may have been discussed on this message board at some time in the recent past, but would someone take a moment to unconfuse me about a reference in the OR to a battery of "2 pounder steel howitzers" assigned to the Tenth Illinois Cavalry in the Army of the Frontier in 1862-63. The Army of the Frontier included several batteries of standard 12-pounder mountain howitzers but these weapons appear to be something entirely different. What were they and does a photo exist?
