29th Wis. chron and Adj. Sweeney

A number of questions arise from this narrative (all taken from Private T.P. Major's official papers)

On April 2, 1863 Private T. P. Major had a leave of absence to accompany Adjutant Valentine Sweeney to Wisconsin. He returned to duty on May 10th and participated in the Battle of Champion Hill. During the siege of Vicksburg, Private Major was detached to the 16th Ohio Light Artillery "by order of General Grant" to serve as a blacksmith. He eventually died of chronic diarrhea in Berwich Bay, La.

Questions:
1. Who was Adjutant Sweeney?
2. The 29th Wis. had been invovled in the Battle of Port

Gibson in May 1st. How was Thomas Major able to rejoin

his regiment in enemy territory on the 10th?
3. Certainly Gen. Grant was not personally involved in

reassigning a private from one unit as a blacksmith

in another. Is this comment just a bureaucratic rubber

stamp?

Finally, family lore has it that T.P returned to Wisconsin to bury a friend. Is this even a possibility?

Thanks to anyone who wishes to tackle any of this!
