Thanks, George. My interest is in the Hampton legion, which suffered most of the casualties in Jenkins' Brigade. Sometimes, its almost impossible to determine which unit was across the line from the other, partiuclarly since the Confederates left little paper trail of this engagement. A dismounted cavalryman, undoubtedly from the 1 Wis Cav, shot and killed CAPT T. A. G. Clarke, of Company H of the Legion; Clarke had just returned from an extended wound furlough the day previous, and had gotten married while on furlough. Two of the Culclasures, father and son, also belonging to Comapny H, but assigned to the litter corps, went to retrieve Clarke, and were shot and killed by the same cavalryman.
This was perhaps Sheridan's worst fought battle in the war. He and Granger had at least parity in numbers, if not a substantial advantyage, but the Federal commanders left the badly outnumbered advance units to their own devices, and did not bring up reinforcements which were close at hand. Granger wanted the foraging grounds across the river from Dandridge, but by shoddy tactics he abandoned them to Longstreet. There was a strange lack of aggressiveness on the part of the Unbion command, when it is clear to me that the Federal units which were engaged fought well, despite their lack of support.
