Hi everyone.
I'm doing some research on Civil War regiments in general and Wisconsin regiments in particular. If you look at the muster dates of all of the Wisconsin regiments except individual batteries of the heavy artillery you will find that no new regiments were formed in 1863. I conjecture that a couple of reasons may exist for this, 1)1863 was particularly brutal and all new recruits went as replacements, or 2) after Grant assumed control the nature of the war changed and became more modern. Namely the goal changed to that of destruction of the opposing force.
So, in 1864 new regiments were formed and sent to the Union effort. My question is: does anyone have another idea as to why 1863 saw no growth? Thanks!!
