I think that is very true. More so on the Confederate side than on the Union side. The ladies of the south had to contend with the hostilities in their own "back yard" where as the women of the North did not have that added burden. We see many women serving as nurses, etc. all the time facing oppositin from the surgeons and others in the army's. Nothing like a mother or sister or a wife when the going gets tough.
