Jacob R. Ludlow

Hi Melissa:

I have no information on any Union army hospital personal. If you have not already done so, you should contact the GAR Museum and Library in Philadelphia to see what assistance their volunteers might render.

Samuel Bates' "History of Pennsylvania Volunteers" (5 Volumes) is available in a searchable format on line at the University of Michigan's Making of America website: http://www.hti.umich.edu/m/moagrp/ Search for "History of Pennsylvania Volunteers."

In Volume I, Jacob R. LUDLOW is listed as the regimental surgeon of the First Pennsylvania Regiment of Volunteer Militia (90 days) which was enrolled 20 APR 1861 at Harrisburg and sent to the Valley of Virginia. The regiment was returned to Harrisburg and mustered out of service on 23 JULY 1861.

In Volume IV, a history of the 151st Pennsylvania Infantry was given. Jacob R. Ludlow was not named among the surgeons and assistant surgeons assigned to this three year regiment.

In Volume V, Jacob R. LUDLOW is named on a list of "Officers Appointed from Pennsylvania" as a Surgeon holding the rank of Major appointed 19 FEB 1863.

Hopefully the volunteers at the GAR Museum can help you fill in the gap between 23 JUL 1861 and 19 FEB 1863. Good luck with your research!
