Jim, I posed this matter to two people who are very knowledgeable about the Civil War history of this part of Pennsylvania. One felt strongly that the story was entirely fiction, perhaps an effort at propaganda. The other doubted its authenticity but said "it is not outside the realm of probability." Apparently, there was some fairly strong pro-Confederate sentiment in Adams County and others along the southern tier of the state. In 1860, Gettysburg had two newspapers--one pro-Union and "the other leaning in the opposite direction."
