Have you obtained his Compiled Military Service Record from the National Archives? With his pension application and certificate numbers you can also order his pension application from the National Archives. The CMSR will contain info about his military service, while the pension application file usually contains info that is more genealogical in nature. In order to qualify for a pension, the veteran had to prove that (1) he had a disability or disease directly related to his Civil War service (wounded, disease, etc.), (2) he was honorably discharged, (3) he was of good character, (4) he had financial need, etc.
