Ohio 36th Co C problem

Ok here is my problem. I have been researching a Ohio 36th soldier for sometime and reading his military papers has presented with a problem. He deserted from the 36th from Feb 2, 1863 to Aug 9, 1863 when he appears to have been caught by Provost Marshal near Ft Donaldson KY. He is then sent to his unit and by documents was sentenced to six months hard labor and foreith six and a half months pay. He was sentenced to prison in Nashville. He was released from August 10, 1864. He was then sent to Cumberland Md August 17, 1864 and discharged Sept 3, 1864 from Harpers Ferry. Now here is my problem. No where does it say he was in anymore engagements after he was released. First question: Could he have been in anymore? His company was not released until Sept 18. Second question: Could his date of release be wrong or could he been released before his company.

Now his name appears on the List of Prisons confined in Military Prison of Wheeling Va. (also known as Atheneum Prison). On the very bottom of this paper it states in the Remarks "Released Prisoner set to Cumberland Md Aug 17/64. Could he have fought in a battle there? This is one of the Military Papers obtained from National Archives. I believe this is correct. In Ohio his name appears in the rooster for Ohio 36th as being discharged on September 18, yet all his papers I have stated he was discharged Sept 3.

Someone please give me an opinion. Elaine Day
