42nd O.V.I.

I am writing to ask for advice. My son recently began a school project that connected family history with the Civil War. What began as an interesting assignment has now opened new areas for me that I never studied.

In a few brief weeks I have become consumed with learning as much about my family AND the Civil War as possible. I actually have dreamed about the Civil War.

Could anybody out there help me with two questions:
1. Aside from the Mason and Hopkins books about the 42nd O.V.I., are there any other sources that I could study to learn about that regiment? (Also, when a soldier wrote about his experiences with a particular regiment, did he write about all the companies associated with that regiment?)
2. What is the best website to do family genealogy relating to the Civil War?

Thank you (very much) in advance for the help.
Chuck
