Craig, it is very interesting that you have found other family trees for Dema and Edwin, especially since they name their father as William rather than Charles W. WELLS. Can you tell me where you found these trees so that I might examine them also? The given name, William, opens up a whole new area to search.

On the 1860 Dunklin Co., MO census, Martha's age is shown as 2/12 which I understand would mean that she was 2 months old. So she doesn't fit with Martha Motts WELLS, b. 1848. I have not been able to find any trace of Edwin's sister, Martha, at all. The descendant of Dema that I corresponded with seemed to be unaware of any Martha and so I tend to think that she might have died very young. I have not found any carry over of the given name, Martha, amongst later generations.

So far I've found no marriage data on Charles W. WELLS and Elizabeth SHAIBLE.

I wrote to the National Archives for a military record on Charles W. WELLS with the 16th Ohio Vol. Cav. Co. K and they were unable to locate a file on him. They recommended writing to the Ohio Historical Society, Archives -Manuscript Division.

I have been spending a lot of time searching 1870 census trying to discover where Charles W. WELLS was at that time with absolutely no success so far. Even figuring that he might have been injured in the Civil War, you would think that by 1870 he would have recovered enough to have been picked up by the census.

Thanks again so much for helping with this puzzle.

Peggy
