On Dec. 20, Kent State University Press will release 'Phantoms of the South Fork: Captain McNeill and His Rangers." My book describes in detail the adventures and exploits of a small band of partisan rangers who roamed the Potomac Highlands of eastern WV and the Shenandoah Valley. They skirmished Ohio infantry, charged with guarding the B&O line, frequently and, in the early morning hours of Feb. 21, 1865, captured Gen. George Crook from his Cumberland, Md. hotel room.
