Re: 11th Ohio Cavalry
In Response To: 11th Ohio Cavalry ()

There are at least two books on the 11th Ohio Cav., but do not forget Dee Brown's "Galvanized Yankees" from the early [19]60s (a couple companies of the 11th were ex-confederates).

"Tending the Talking Wire : A Buck Soldier's View of Indian Country 1863-1866." 1979, ed. William Unrau. ( Letters of Hervey Johnson, of Company G. University of Utah Press.) Far, far the better book. Good maps & illustrations.

VERY disappointing is Robert Huhn Jones's (2005) "Guarding the Overland Trails: The Eleventh Ohio Cavalry in the Civil War." (A. H. Clark Co.). I don't believe Jones dug much deeper than the ORs and Whitelaw Reid (perhaps I'm too harsh; read for yourself).

Of some interest, the 11th Cav was armed in part with Spencer rifles (NOT carbines), and 44-cal Wesson "rifles" (NOT Ballards as you may read).

I found this pretty good bibliography in ohiocivilwar [dot] com :
