age55 110th??? Why????

My gggGrandfather, John McNamee, enlisted when he was 55 yrs. old as a "substitute" in Company D (Xenia, OH) OH 110th infantry. Does substitute mean he replaced another member of his family?(None of his children were old enough - and I cannot find evidence of brothers or cousins In Xenia. (John immigrated from Fermanagh, IRE to OH in 1849) so I have lost the family connection. I am blown away (the median age in 110th was about 21 or 22).
Okay next part of my question - He was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corp. after being released from Confederate Prison. What exactly was the Veteran Reserve Corp. Please pardon my ignorance, but I am just beginning my research into this aspect of his life in the US. I am in the process of reading "The Weary Boys" about the OH 110th - but it has created more questions for me than answers - and I guess that is good.
Thank you in advance for any direction in this matter.
