Reverend Gillette ministered to Lewis Powell, aka Lewis Paine, on the morning of the execution. As I'm sure you recall Powell was the conspirator assigned to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward. Though unsuccessful Powell did severely wound Seward, as well as four other people, in a wild rampage through the Seward house. Powell spent the morning of his execution eating his breakfast and speaking with Reverend Gillette about his childhood in Florida.
