The American Civil War Research Database entry Captain Sunderlin contains a post-war image of him.

VanRenselaer W. Sunderlin

Residence Pewamo MI; a 35 year-old Physician.

Enlisted on 10/3/1861 at Pewamo, MI as a Captain.

On 1/17/1862 he was commissioned into "F" Co. MI 13th Infantry
He Resigned on 11/19/1862

born 9/28/1826 in Dundee, Yates County, NY
died 6/25/1883
Buried: National Cemetery, Fort Scott, KS

(Married Julia Banister Jan. 31, 1867)

After the War he lived in Fort Scott, KS
