I suggest looking into the NPS Grants Program: Save American's Treasures - http://www.nps.gov/hps/treasures/index.htm. This program tends to focus on saving sites of national significance but they should be able to point you to other programs if they don't feel they can fund your project. Another option is to contact the state Historic Preservation Office http://www.michigan.gov/mshda/0,1607,7-141-54317---,00.html for details about preservation grants in Michigan.
