Re: Bvt Brig. Gen. William True Bennett.

I have in my posession a field promotion for William T. Bennett to the rank of Capation, 1st U. S. Colored Troops. It is dated June 10, 1863 and signed by Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War. The large document is folded three ways into six sections, and appears to have been glued to a piece of what looks like rather stained bed linen of some sort due to the folds becoming separated and worn. I am a collector of postal history of the Carolinas, esp. Confederate postal history. The document appears to be authentic, as does Stanton's signature. I have not been able to locate another example of this war department document, but I assume Capt. Bennett used this document frequently, perhaps to show his authority over these black troops in a hostile territory. The information on William Bennett and the link to his bio was very helpful to me. Thank you very much! Warren.
