Re: 14th Michigan Infantry
Major Fitzgibbon had an interesting past, he was editor of the "Detroit Guardian" newspaper prior to joining the 14th, and also was mail agent for the Detroit and Milwaukee railroad. There are several references to him in the volumes of "War of Rebellion" including the story of his being shot while under a white flag. He was on a mission to deliver a message from General Sherman to Gen Wade Hampton as I recall. I have a copy of a letter he wrote while in the hospital in Washington, it is directed to a friend in Detroit.
