Re: Charles W. Austin, Co. A 5th Michigan Cavalry

JR,

No, sorry, I have no idea as to the identity of Alonzo Austin. To my family's knowledge, Charles was my Great Great Grandfather's only sibling and they were orphaned and separated as children in 1851 when their parents John and Anna Austin (my Great Great Great Grandparents originally from New York) both died when a cholera epidemic swept the Detroit area.

My Great Great Grandfather, Abner Delos Austin, enlisted in Company I of the 24th Michigan Infantry at Redford on August 2, 1862, stating his age to be 19 when he was only 16. (Perhaps one of the many boys I am told put handwritten notes reading "18" in their shoes so that they would be telling the truth when stating that they were indeed "over 18".) He served with the Iron Brigade of the West leading up to July 1, 1863 at Gettysburg, when he was wounded during the fighting at McPherson's Ridge. If you're interested, you can read more about my Great Great Grandfather at:

We have no idea if the Austin brothers were ever united as Waterford and Redford were a great distance apart in those days. I have often thought it poignant to think that both brothers were present at Gettysburg and probably didn't even know it. The stuff that great movies are made of! :-)

Again, thank you for your assistance in putting together some pieces in the puzzle of my family tree!
