1st Michigan Cavalry "Custer's Brigade"

My wife's g-g-grandfather, Pvt. John Jacob Bittmann, fought in Company C, 1st Michigan Cavalry. He enlisted in December 23, 1863, at Clinton, Michigan, fought in the Battle of the Wilderness, and was captured June 13, 1864, Baltimore Crossroads/North Anna River. He was described as a "Saddler" for this unit. My question is, would he have been strictly a "support" person, remaining in the rear with other support people, or would the Company's personnel been not only expected to support, but to fight? Would he have been on the line also? After being captured, he was sent to Andersonville Prison, where he died in October 26, 1864 of starvation and disease. He had been in the Regular Army in the 1850's where he was stationed at West Point Military Academy in the Dragoons, and I expect this previous experience led him to enlisting in the cavalry. Thank you for any help that anyone can provide.
