He was a corporal in the color guard which meant he was assigned to either the state regimental flag or the national colors at times. There are numerous sites describing the role of a soldier in the color guard. I see him in Elder's company which was referred to as Elder's Zouaves. Ive never been able to find out if they ever were outfitted in the Zouave uniform as a whole. Ive also never seen the pic of the zouave uniform they used or if the entire company was outfitted in the zouave uniform. I take it you have his military and pension records? If so when was he sent home for being sick? There are other records like medical records sometimes available for soldiers that you dont get from national archives records.
