I want to thank you guys; Gary , Kenneth, Johnny Reb and Alan for your responses. I took Kenneth's advice and contacted the SUVCW and they hooked me up with the forms and told me how to contact the VA. He also told me that with the info I have I shouldn't have any problem, he also gave me some contacts of SUVCW folks near the Cemetary that would help out with a dedication.
Just to give some background on this soldier: His name was Pvt.Frederick Bleidorn, immigrated from Prussia in 1858 and in 1861 enlisted in the United States Army in Captain McDermott’s Company, Irish Regiment, Illinois Volunteers, which subsequently became Company A, 23rd Regiment Illinois Infantry. On 24 December 1862, he was honorably discharged at New Creek, Virginia and reenlisted in Company K, 1st Regiment United States Cavalry.

In a battle near Gordonville, Virginia on the 27th of September 1864 he received a bullet wound to the left leg. The wound was severe, and left him disabled the rest of his life.

After his discharge from the Army he came to Detroit and married. He died in Jan 1877, leaving a widow with three small children. Due to the fact that there was a case of smallpox in the home at the time of his death and the home was under quarntine, there was no funeral. He and a daughter age 3, were buried the same day in unmarked graves in the Woodmere Cemetary in Detroit. Another consequence was that the War Dept. denied his widows claim for pension claiming that his death was attributed to small pox, rather then complications of surgery on his wound, 2 weeks prior to his death as claimed by his widow in her appeal for pension. The children were placed in an orphanage and the wife dissapeared.

Now considering the fact that this man lies in an unmarked grave in the same cemetary as the coward Eddie Slovik, upon whose grave flags fly on Veterans Day, I think getting Pvt. Bleidorn a proper headstone isn't asking too much, and I'm going to do my best to make it happen. (my apoligies to the moderator, I don't want to stir up any trouble, I would just like to see that the true heros get their due. If you think I'm out of line feel free to delete, no hard feelings)

Thanks again guys, for your help.

Mark
