Robert Helmer was stationed in West Tennessee with the 3rd Michigan. The 7th Tennessee Cavalry was a local West Tennessee regiment that was raised for the Union and served as scouts for the 3rd Michigan at times. When the 7th decided to add a new company, (K) three 3rd Michigan officers were tapped to head it. I have no idea why. Robert Helmer was promoted from 1st Sgt of Co A 3rd Michigan to Lt of Co K 7th. He began his time in the 7th on 4/15/63 at age 35. I have a lot more on his military career if you will e-mail be at holleyps@yahoo.com.

Helmer is buried in the Richter/Tanner Cemetery in Dorr, MI. He died on May 12,1885 at age 57. Ellen A is buried there as well. She died Dec 14, 1888 at age 43.

The captain of Co K, John Beatty, died in Grand Rapids and is in the cemetery by the old soldiers home. I have not been able to find a grave site for the other Lt, John J Wallace.
