Re: 19th Mich at Battle of Gilgal Church

Hello, Janet,

As far as I can determine, none of the 9 wounded at Gilgal died from their wounds.

Cassville, May 19:
* Pvt. Henry R. Sharpe (Co. E) of Sturgis, Mich. Killed in action. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.: Section A, Grave 578. Apparently none of those wounded at the battle subsequently died.

New Hope Church, May 25 [Only four soldiers are listed as being killed or died from wounds at this battle]
* Pvt. James C. Chancey (Co. I). KIA. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.
* Capt. Charles W. Bigelow (Co. G) of South Haven, Mich. Died in Nashville, Tenn. on May 29 of wounds received. Burial place unknown.
* Pvt. William H. Nichols (Co. A) of Marcellus, Mich. Died in Chattanooga on June 6 of wounds received. Burial place unknown.
* Pvt. John Peters (Co. A) of Bainbridge, Mich. Died in Chattanooga on June 9 of wounds received. Buried in National Cemetery, Chattanooga, Tenn.: Grave 11352.

It is possible that Pvt. Homer N. Hungerford (Co. A) may be the fifth. He is listed as KIA at Dallas, Ga. on May 25; Dallas is very close to New Hope Church. Burial place unknown.

Other 19th Michigan soldiers KIA or died from wounds from battle on May 25:
* 1st Lt. Charles Manderville (Co. H) of Constantine, Mich. KIA at Allatoona, Ga. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.: Section C, Grave 2284.
* Pvt. Frederick Campbell (Co. B) of Martin, Mich. KIA at Allatoona, Ga. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.: Section A, Grave 999.
* Pvt. Francis Blackburn (Co. G). KIA at Allatoona, Ga. Buried in National Cemetery, Marietta, Ga.: Section A, Grave 1000. [record says he was KIA on May 26]
