Hello, Robert,

According to the 1860 census, William Ross was born in Canada, ca.1835. In 1860 he was living in Algonac (Clay Twp.) in St. Clair County, Michigan and was a farmer. The members of his household at the time are: Jane (his wife b. ca. 1838 in New York); son Robert (b. ca. 1857 in Michigan); daughter Mary (b. ca. 1859 in Michigan); his mother(?) Margret Ross (b. ca. 1798 in Scotland); and a Margret Huxtable (b. ca. 1849 in Canada).

William Ross enlisted in 22nd Michigan Infantry Regiment on August 2, 1862 at Algonac as a Corporal; on August 22, 1862 he was mustered into Company E. He was killed on September 20, 1863 at the Battle of Chickamauga in Georgia.

In January 1864 Jane applied for a widow's pension from the government.

The 1870 census shows Jane Ross living in China (St. Clair Co.), Michigan. Her children are listed as follows: Robert J. (age 13), Mary A. (age 11), Charlotte E. (age 9), and William H(?). (age 7). Interestingly Jane now says she was born in Ohio.

Hope this is of some use.
Robert
