Hello, Gene,

According to the Michigan Adjutant Generals' "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War: 16th Michigan Infantry" (Kalamazoo, 1905), John Hinds enlisted in the Second Company of Sharpshooters, attached to the 16th Infantry, on 28 April 1864 at Vernon at age 19. It also says that a company of sharpshooters was recruited at Detroit and mustered into service 3 May 1864, and was known as "Jardine's Sharpshooters," as it was organized by Capt. George Jardine, and was designated as the seocnd company of sharpshooters attached to the 16th Infantry.
