I believe such headstones are provided through the U.S. Army Veterans Administration burial & memorial benefits web site at no charge. The web site link is http://www.cem.va.gov/hm.htm with some examples at http://www.cem.va.gov/hmcivil.htm or write: Patrick V. McNamara Federal Bldg., 477 Michigan Ave.Detroit, MI 48226 Phone: 1-800-827-1000

“Headstones and Markers
The United States Government provides headstones and markers for the graves of veterans and eligible dependents anywhere in the world which are not already marked. Flat bronze, flat granite, flat marble and upright marble types are available to mark the grave of a veteran or dependent in the style consistent with exiting monuments at the place of burial.” – VA Website

Often, graves of that era were marked with wooden crosses or markers that have long since rotted away. I would request on this Veterans behalf that the Twp. Investigate having a proper marker placed for this brave veteran of the U.S. Civil War. The local American Legion or Amvets Post can also provide assistance and possibly a Veteran's Flag Staff. Otherwise those are available through one of the best suppliers of Veteran's Flag Staff Markers I have found being: Centec Cast Metal Products 501 Knapp St. Box 645, Freemont, OH 43420 1-800-969-3740 http://www.centeccast.com/product/veteran_markers/service_markers/default.html
