Hello, Gene,

According to the Michigan Adjutant Generals' "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War: 3rd Michigan Cavalry" (Kalamazoo, 1905), Eckert (born ca. 1826) in New York state)was a resident of Ionia Co., Michigan. He enlisted with Company I of the regiment on 10 Sept 1861. He died of disease in Memphis, Tenn. on 18 Apr 1863 and is buried in the National Cemetery in that city.

The 1860 census lists him as a farm laborer living in Boston, Ionia Co., Michigan. His wife was Maria E. Eckert (born ca. 1832 in New York). Their two childen are also listed: James (born ca. 1854 in New York) and Sarah M. (born ca. 1857 in New York).

I don't find any record of a pension request his wife might have filed.

Hope this helps.
Robert
