Thanks Mark. Earlier this week I went to the CWSS database and found the info you sent me. He's listed as Harry A. Houston on the Illinois Roll. Born in Center County, Pa. and enlisted in the 50th Ill. at St.Joseph,Mo. on Nov.1,1861. His home is listed as Hawleyville, Page County. Iowa. He was transfered by promotion to Capt. of Co.C ,1st Alabama (African Descent) latter to be named the 55th,USCT.His occupation when he joined is listed as a printer. How he arrived in Mecosta County, Michigan after the war is anybody's guess but that part of Michigan was in the lumbering business then so maybe that's the answer. It sounds like he was in some very nasty battles with the 50th Ill.(Shiloh in particular) and must have shown remarkable leadership abilities as a 1st Sgt. which warranted his promotion to Capt. in the 55th USCT. Thanks,Gene.
