The Michigan in the Civil War Message Board

William True Bennett.

Is anyone doing any research on Michigan born and educated brevet Brigadier General William True Bennett, who had served with the 1st United States Colored Troops, 102nd United States Colored Troops and the 33rd United States Colored Troops? I have information that shows that Bennett had been, prior to the war, a travelling photographer in the state of Queensland, Australia. He obviously returned to the United States prior to the Civil War, and later also served in the Spanish American War. Died in California in 1910, and is buried in Los Angeles.
I would like to find out the exact year he returned to the United States, and also if he had returned to Australia as a traveller, at any time, and when exactly. I have come upon a letter that he wrote to a Brisbane newspaper in 1878, which indicates his fondness of the Australian colonies.
