Robert,
Regarding your question about Giles Lindsley being from New York, but enlisting in a Michigan regiment....This was actually fairly common during the war. During the pre-war years many people left New York (as well as the other eastern states) seeking economic opportunities in the "frontiers" of the young state of Michigan. But when the war broke out, it presented an additional opportunity as well as a higher call to duty, for these new citizens of our state. So even though they were originally from New York, they availed themselves in the service of their recently adopted state to answer the "call to arms". I'm sure that's true in all of the other Michigan regiments as well. In fact, many of the men that enlisted in the Fourth Michigan Infantry (my researching interest), were originally from the state of New York.
