Re: Charles Henry and John Smith Axtell at Appomat

Royce,
In December of 1862, a "John S. Axtel" joined the Sixth Michigan Calvary (one of the four regiments of the "Michigan Brigade") under General George Custer.
Coincidently, a "Charles H. Axtel" who had previously served in the Third Michigan Infantry and discharged in June of 1862, had re-enlisted in the service in August of 1863, and served as Gen. George Custer's Bandmaster. Both men were discharged in 1865, John in July, and Charles in October, at Ft. Leavenworth Kansas. And as Gen. Custer was at Appomattox, he seems to be the common denominator. The question is whether this John Axtel (of the Sixth Michigan Cavalry), had anything to do with the band while serving under Custer. I would look into some of the better books on Custer's Wolverine Cavalry out there for more help on this. Good luck and hope this helped.
