The 1st Battalion Maryland Cavalry was organized November 12, 1862. The designation was changed to the 1st Regiment Maryland Cavalry January 19, 1864
The July/August, 1863 muster roll appears to be the first Company C roll found in the Compiled Service Records
Company C, Record of Events July & August, 1863
July 1 reported to Genl Ewell at Gettysburg. Engaged in the support of a Battery[?]. in the evening gathered uf? arms - stragglers[?] and assisted in guarding prisoners. July 2 engaged in collecting arms & ammunition on the battle field and a portion of the Co. scouted along the York Road to ascertain the position of the enemy’s cavalry. afterwards engaged in collecting stragglers for Genl Johnson’s Division. 4th In the morning engaged in collecting stragglers and sending them to the rear. afterwards ordered ???? the Battalion to guard Genl Ewells wagon train to Williamsport nine men captured by the enemy 5th arrived at Williamsport . . . . . . .
