1st Battery, Maryland Artillery
1st Artillery Company [also called the Maryland Flying Battery] was organized at Richmond, Virginia, in July, 1861 with men from Baltimore and the Eastern Shore. The unit served in the Department of Fredericksburg, then was assigned to R.S. Andrews', J.W. Latimer's, and C.M. Braxton's Battalion, and later the Maryland Line and D. G. McIntosh's Battalion. It fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Mine Run, saw action at Cold Harbor and south of the James River, then was involved in the Appomattox operations. The company lost 1 killed and 8 wounded during the Seven Days' Battles, had 1 killed and 6 wounded at Second Manassas, and Days' Battles, had 1 killed and 4 wounded of the 90 engaged at Gettysburg. It surrendered with 1 officer and 36 men. Captains R. Snowden and William F. Dement were in command.
