John W. Stewart, Co. F, 9th KS Calvary or Infantry

Dear Friends,

I am searching for any information about my ancestor John W. Stewart, born about 1820 in Ohio, and settled in Kansas in 1857. He was a mill owner and operator, and also a Methodist minister. He lived in Miami and Neosho counties, and likely also in Garnett, Anderson County, where his sons Charles C. and William H. Stewart resided. His headstone in the Garnett Cemetery,(which is damaged) appears to read:
Co. F, 9th Kansas _________. Possibly Calvary or Infantry.
Does anyone know an easy way to locate the correct unit in which John W. Stewart served during the Civil War? I would like to pursue obtaining his records from the National Archives in Washington, but need to narrow down my search with some accurate information. Thank you for any and all help or suggestions. Best regards, Jim Sazevich, 454 N. Smith Ave., St. Paul, MN 55102-2726. Phone: 651-222-8160.
