If you will note Private Nicholas Smith, Leavenworth, Kansas, may actually be Verres Nicholas Smith, of Leavenworth, H. P. Johnson's brother-in-law - a white, fairly wealthy man!

If this can be proved, then was Smith one of the very, very few soldiers who actually served in the Civil War under all black officers?
