Post-wound furloughs?

I can't find the answer to this anywhere--perhaps I am not phrasing it correctly--but thought you all might have a good idea about it. (My gg grandfather was a Kansas civil war vet, so I turn to my home folks here!)

When a soldier was wounded during the war, how often did he just go home to recover? I know that this is possible--furloughs could be taken for a number of reasons--but I'm wondering how often it happened.

For instance, a soldier was wounded in Georgia. Out of commission, but still somewhat ambulatory. Could he go home to, say, Ohio, from there? And then, once better, rejoin his unit? Would that be an extremely unusual circumstance?

Of course, he could just desert, but if he did that, would he be allowed to rejoin the same unit?

The devil's in the details, and this one's got me stumped.
