Dean.... Here is what I found on the 5th Kansas Cavalry soldiers buried in the Barnesville cemetary.

Private John Holden, Company B, survived the Civil War and was living in Leon, Iowa in 1911. Of the soldiers buried here, he is the only post war survivor found.

Private Jesse Newland, Company B, died of disease at Camp Denver, Barnesville on May 17, 1862.

Private James Knoop, Company B, died of disease at Barnesville on December 25, 1861.

Private Daniel Sellers, 25, Company C, died of disease at Fort Scott on February 14, 1862.

Private James B. Throgmorton (Throckmorton), 22, Company C, died of disease at Camp Denver, February 13, 1862.

Private Christopher C. Brown, 21, Company C, was killed falling from a tree while on post.

Corporal Benjamin A. Worley (listed as private), Company F, died of disease at Helena, Arkansas on August 5, 1862.

Private Daniel Bodley, Company K, deserted to the enemy the day he enlisted, December 20, 1861 and died at Barnesville on March 8, 1862.

Private Joseph C. Morton, 24, Company K, drowned in the Osage River in Kansas on February 11, 1862.

The other twelve unknowns could all be 5th Kansas soldiers. The most likely candidates are:

1.) 1st Sergeant Chauncy L. Terrill, Company A, died of pneumonia at Barnesville on February 25, 1862.

2.) Private John G. Moore, Company B, died of disease at Barnesville on March 8, 1862.

3.) Private Chauncy J. Reynolds, Company B, died of disease at Barnesville on September 29, 1861.

4.) Private Feilding Loe, Company C, died of disease at Barnesville on February 27, 1862.

5.) Private Aaron O. Cox, Company G, died of pneumonia at Camp Denver on February 29, 1862.

6.) Private John C. Lawrence, Company G, died of measles at Camp Denver on December 31, 1861.

7.) Private Moore Lumpkins, Company G, died of measles at Camp Denver on November 11, 1861.

8.) Private Frederick Brown, Company K, died of disease at Barnesville on March 28, 1862.

9.) Private James A. Hornback, Company K, died of disease at Camp Denver on February 14, 1862.

10.) Private William B. Lewis, Company K, died of disease at Camp Denver on January 1, 1862.

11.) Private Issac Miller, Company K, died of disease at Camp Denver on February 21, 1862.

12.) Private James W. Privitt, Company K, died of disease at Camp Denver on January 17, 1862.

There are another 13 men who died during the period that the 5th Kansas wintered at Barnesville but they died at Fort Scott and may be buried there, or at Osawatomie, Fort Lincoln, Lamar and one on the march.

With the cemetary that close to "Camp Denver", there must be evidence of the campsites of at least six or seven companies of soldiers. I do have a brief description of Camp Denver from Lieutenant Henry Miles Moore who visited the 5th Kansas during this period.

Fascinating information. Thanks for sharing.
